Morneau Shepell Ltd. sponsored the Conference Board of Canada’s report* “Minding What Matters Advancing Mental Health in Canadian Organizations”, June 2011 (Report -72 page PDF)
* Note you must be a member of the Conference Board of Canada in order to view this report

Description: this detailed report provides insights and recommendations in managing mental health issues in the workplace and reveals how EAPs can lead to healthier and more productive workplaces.

Who: The Conference Board of Canada in January 2011, sponsored by Morneau Shepell Ltd.

What: The research is based on a survey of 1,010 individuals currently employed on either a part-time or full-time basis, including 479 front-line managers who supervise or manage other people in the workplace. The research is supplemented with a total of 30 follow-up, in-depth interviews.

Result: Key insights are provided into what employees with mental health issues experience in the workplace, roles in supporting mental health, cultures in the workplace that support mental health, accommodation and return to work, what employees know about mental health and how to create positive change in the workplace.

Relevance: Although some progress has been made, critical challenges still exist in eliminating the fear and stigma around mental health issues. Communication and education is still required. Leaders still need to be made to understand how to institute change in attitude in the workplace to support mental health. Managers have a key role to play and can significantly affect an employee’s well being. Ensuring that people managers are equipped with the skills, training and tools to help them support mental health and manage people experiencing mental health issues will create a stronger return to work strategy and a healthier workplace.
