Changes in self-schema structure in cognitive therapy for major depressive disorder
A study looking at the long-term impact of cognitive therapy on 42 individuals suffering from major depressive disorder. Undergoing cognitive therapy in addition to pharmacotherapy led to a positive shift in cognitive organization. These changes were not evident in the portion of the sample only undergoing pharmacotherapy. While there is a lot of research supporting the use of cognitive therapy in employee assistance programs, this is the first study to show that cognitive therapy can effect positive change to cognitive organization. This offers a possible explanation for why cognitive therapy can lower future relapse rates of depression.
